How Often Have You Felt Disadvantaged? Explaining Perceived Discrimination

چکیده

Abstract Based on longitudinal data from Germany, we analyze how perceptions of discrimination change once migrants’ integration evolves. Individuals who identify more strongly with the host country, speak language, have native friends, and are adequately employed report less overall. However, group-specific analyses reveal that German-born Turks feel rather than discriminated against after their language skills identification increase. For this group, find evidence for “integration paradox”, i.e., finding better educated migrants negative attitudes about society. Results suggest attributional processes rising exposure to might be main mechanism linking higher levels perceived discrimination. Obviously, does not disappear groups facing salient ethnic boundaries is met growing awareness sensitivity among individuals become similar majority members. This, in turn, by no means implies detached reality.

How often should you clean your room?

We introduce and study a combinatorial optimization problem motivated by the question in the title. In the simple case where you use all objects in your room equally often, we investigate asymptotics of the optimal time to clean up in terms of the number of objects in your room. In particular, we prove a logarithmic upper bound, solve an approximate version of this problem, and conjecture a pre...

Intracellular actin-based transport: how far you go depends on how often you switch.

Intracellular molecular motor-driven transport is essential for such diverse processes as mitosis, neuronal function, and mitochondrial transport. Whereas there have been in vitro studies of how motors function at the single-molecule level, and in vivo studies of the structure of filamentary networks, studies of how the motors effectively use the networks for transportation have been lacking. W...

How Often Do You Perform Aortic Valve Repair?

Mitral valve repair has become the norm of current cardiac surgical practice and, in most cases, can be successfully implemented to treat degenerative and myxomatous valve disease. On the other hand, aortic valve repair has not been unequivocally accepted by the cardiothoracic community as a norm for treatment of aortic valve disease. There are proponents of aortic valve repair who argue that i...

Learning to like What You Have – Explaining the Endowment Effect*

The endowment effect describes the fact that people demand much more to give up an object than they are willing to spend to acquire it. The existence of this effect has been documented in numerous experiments. We attempt to explain this effect by showing that evolution favors individuals whose preferences embody an endowment effect. The reason is that an endowment effect improves one’s bargaini...
